“Ithaca gave you the marvellous journey. Without her you would not have set out.”C.P Cavafy
Ithaca, situated on the West Coast of Greece and best known for Homer’s Odyssey and the story of Ulysses, is increasing in popularity as it is one of few islands left where one can still find the traditional, untouched Greece. Ithaca, also called the Gem of the Ionian, is renowned for its friendly community of around 3500 permanent residents, quaint traditional villages, pebble coves with pristine aqua waters and its lush green mountains dotted in cypress trees and olive groves.
Her natural beauty, temperate weather and limited commercialization makes Ithaca a worthy Spring and Summer destination for families with children and for people looking for a peaceful getaway. The island is also becoming increasingly popular amongst eco-tourists as more and more urbanites are looking for vacation destinations closer to nature. The villages are joined by many walking trails, some of which date back to the ancient era. One can choose to trek these paths alone, or in an organized group. There is also the option of renting a canoe from Polis Beach where one can wonder out of the bay and find beautiful waters for snorkelling, fishing or just for relaxing. Another popular activity is renting a boat for the day where one can explore the coastline of the island and her many secluded beaches without the need of a tour guide or even a boat license. Furthermore, the island continues to produce its own olive oil and wine using traditional methods. Locals are always pleased to involve tourists in these activities in harvesting.
Low season months such as April, May, September and October have a milder climate with fewer tourists and it is common for authors, poets and artists to visit the Island during these periods filled with colour and the inspiring song of the sea and the cool breeze. High season months from June to August are more about socializing with most of the houses on the island open and the cafeterias and beaches filled with a buzz. However, romanticism is still in the air with the local festivals, also known as Paniyiria, which occur periodically over a 2 month period throughout the islands villages. Great food, local wine, song and music are the main attractions at these Paniyiria and it is a great reminder of the true essence and simplicity of life when one sees people of all ages and origins, holding hands and dancing together.
It is at these moments when one realizes what Ithaca truly means.
